北部には、日本海の荒波が打ちよせる北陸屈指の景勝地、東尋坊や、北陸有数の温泉地、あわら温泉がある。
越前海岸では冬に越前蟹が多く水揚げされる。
福井市には７８０年の歴史ある禅道場で曹洞宗総本山、永平寺がある。
深山に囲まれた広い境内には七堂伽藍などが建ち、現在も修行僧が厳しい修行生活を送る。又、坐禅体験や写経、事前予約をして１泊２日の修行体験も行われている。
永平寺の門前通りには、永平寺名物のそばや胡麻豆腐のお店が並ぶ。
勝山市には、県立恐竜博物館がある。
県南部に位置する小浜市は江戸時代、若狭湾で獲れたさばを京都の朝廷に献上するため運ばれた道、鯖街道があり、宿場町であった熊川宿は当時の面影が残る。
福井県には１５００年続く越前和紙や越前漆器、越前焼の伝統工芸品がつくられている。
