本州最北端に位置する青森県は、津軽半島と下北半島からなり、津軽半島最北端は龍飛崎で、津軽海峡を挟み北海道とを全長約５４km（海底部２３・３km）の青函トンネルがつなぐ。下北半島最北端は大間崎で、大間のマグロは全国的に有名な高級マグロ。
青森県は東北三大夏祭りのねぶた祭りが有名で、青森市（青森ねぶた祭り）、弘前市（弘前ねぷたまつり）、五所川原市（五所川原立佞武多）で開催され全国から多くの人でにぎわう。
秋田県にまたがる広大な白神山地は世界最大級のブナの原生林が自生。１９９３年に世界自然遺産に登録された。
十和田湖から流れる奥入瀬渓流は約１４kmにわたって続く清流。緑豊かな５・６月、秋の紅葉の時期が美しい。
冬には津軽鉄道のレトロなストーブ列車（１２月〜３月）が一日３往復運行。車内ではストーブの上で焼いたするめも楽しめる。
温泉では、ひょうたんの形のお風呂から日本海を見ながら入浴できる、黄金崎不老不死温泉などがある。
